eBay Guide to International Buying
Get Started on eBay | How to Bid & Buy | Pay for Your Item | Receive Your Item

Receive Your Item

Before receiving your item, you may be required to pay additional costs such as duties, taxes, and customs fees. For example, international shipping rates may or may not include pickup and door-to-door delivery with customs clearance. Your package will arrive at your door, but then you might need to pay extra international fees. Even if duties and taxes were not applicable, there may still be an administrative fee for processing the goods across the border.

Customs and Duties

As a buyer, it is important to be aware of what customs charges may apply for your country and product before you bid on or purchase an item. Here are some general rules regarding items sold on eBay.com:

  • Items less than $200 USD. You should have no trouble importing these items. Many of the items in this price range that are prohibited from import, such as tobacco and firearms, are already banned on eBay.
  • Items more than $200 USD. When importing higher dollar value items for personal use, you may have to pay duty or tax, even if the item is used. The amount of the duty, if any, depends on the type of item and its value. Some items can be imported duty-free.
  • Items for commercial use. If you import goods for a commercial purpose, you may have to deal with possible quotas, duties, and paperwork. Commercial goods (goods intended for resale) may have special entry requirements.
  • Check with the seller to determine whether the fees, customs, and taxes are included in the price.

Understand Transit Times

The time it takes to receive your purchase will depend on where you are located and where your package is coming from. International shipments usually take longer than domestic deliveries. You can check delivery times to and from any country with UPS® Time-in-Transit Maps.
